With the assistance of Cross Country Canada’s “Racing Rocks!” program, our local ski club held a tournament for fun on Sunday, February 28th at the Pineview Ski Trails, south of town.
Mother Nature showed her approval by contributing a fresh dump of snow the week before and sprinkling more on us that day but with relatively mild temperatures. The Jackrabbits especially had a great day competing in sprints, 1km, 2km and 3km races as well as trying out their shooting skills with a Biathlon demonstration led by Randy Dalziel.
The club provided skate skis and all children had a chance to use them on the new skate ski trail. Soup and snacks were available in the warm up shelter, built by the Hudson Bay Lions and Weyerhaeuser employees and manned by one of our seniors, Thelma Potter. Medals and ribbons were awarded at the end of the day when all participants climbed the podium at least once.
We thank the local figure skating club for the use of their podium especially since for many of our young skiers it was their first time to be honoured in this way. The Ski Club would also like to thank Affinity Credit Union for raising funds for equipment, Cross Country Saskatchewan and the many parents and volunteers who helped make the day a success.
