Athletes Maya MacIsaac-Jones and Matt Saurette have arrived in Innsbruck, Austria to participate in the first ever Winter Youth Olympic Games. From 13 to 22 January 2012 Innsbruck and Seefeld will play host to the 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games, which will see 1,058 athletes aged 14 to 18 from over 70 nations compete in 63 sporting competitions.
The two Alberta skiers will compete in three events which will include a classic distance race of 5 and 10km and a skate sprint. Their final race will see the Cross Country athletes team up with Biathlon athletes to make a relay team.
The games focus is not only on athletic excellence, but also a cultural and educational experience. Also for a first time in recent history, all Nordic sports will be working together to share coaching and waxing resources. The Biathlon team is lead by Chris Lindsay of Canmore, Alberta, while Cross Country is headed by Lisa Patterson of Thunder Bay, Ontario. The team will be in good hands with the expert wax team of Mike Mappin from Canmore, AB and Mark Tierney of Corner Brook, Newfoundland.
