ÉNGNE to host 2019 Canadian Ski Nationals

Cross Country Canada’s Events Committee is pleased to announce Évènements Nordiques Gatineau Nordic Events (ÉNGNE) will play host to the 2019 Canadian Ski Nationals at the Nakkertok Nordic Ski Centre in early March 2019.

Local clubs including Skinouk, Chelsea Nordiq and Nakkertok have hosted highly successful NorAm Eastern Canadian Championships in the region over the last 14 seasons. For the last 6 years this has been a combined effort of the clubs at the Nakkertok Nordic Centre. ÉNGNE, which presently includes the 3 clubs and the Gatineau Loppet, organized the Opening stage of Ski Tour Canada 2016 World Cup, and are looking forward to again welcome skiers from across Canada to the friendly trails along the border between the City of Gatineau and the Municipality of Cantley, Quebec.

“The Selection Committee was especially impressed with the evolution of the leadership group over the past few seasons,” said Dave Dyer, events director, Cross Country Canada. “ÉNGNE staged the first leg of Ski Tour Canada 2016 which included a dazzling Opening Ceremony and reception in the Canadian History Museum for the 23 visiting international teams. We are excited about bringing our national event to the National Capital Region on the eve of the World Cup Finals which will take place in Quebec City immediately after the Championship event.”

Homologated to FIS standards, the trails at Nakkertok Nordic will provide a variety of options for both senior and junior skiers at the 92nd running of the National Championship event. “We’ve worked hard since 2011 on our trails to meet International standards so the skiers in the region can improve.” stated Dirk van Wijk, co-owner of the Nakkertok facility. With the addition of snow making capacity during the summer of 2016 we can now race earlier and later each season providing a real advantage to the skiers in our program. Tentative dates for the Championships are March 13 – 20, 2019.

“ÉNGNE members are very proud and honoured to have been selected to host the 2019 Canadian Ski Nationals and will do everything needed to enhance the region’s reputation of hosting high quality cross-country events ,” said Claude Laramee, chair of the Local Organizing Committee.

The National Capital Region last hosted the Canadian Junior Ski Nationals at Camp Fortune in 1995 prior to the two age group championships being combined in 1997.  In the interim, the National Capital Region has grown its skier population with the Nakkertok Club having won the Ski Nationals Aggregate crown for 8 straight seasons.  During the same period, the other local clubs have also produced top level national and international skiers.

The 2018 Canadian Ski Nationals will be held at the Lappe Nordic Centre, between March 10 – 17, 2019 where team sprint competitions will lead off an action packed week of racing that includes a 2 day pursuit, sprints and the iconic 50 km, mass start marathon in classic technique.
