National Ski Team Background:
Emily Young (formerly Weekes) climbed onto the podium not once, but twice, in her first trip to the Paralympic Winter Games winning the silver in medal in the mixed relay and a bronze medal in the 7.5 kilometre classic-ski standing race. The triumph was part of an unprecedented 16 medal performance by Canada’s Para-Nordic Team.

 Emily is no stranger to international success. She first climbed onto the world championship podium in February 2017 as she helped Canada to a historic bronze in the 4x2.5 kilometre cross-country relay at the Para Nordic World Championships in Finsterau, Germany. It was the first ever world championship medal in the relay for Canada. In total she raced in six events at both the 2017 and 2015 world championships.

Introduction to Cross-Country Skiing:
Emily was introduced to cross-country skiing in the summer of 2014 by the HollyBurn Cross-Country Ski Team coach, Jake Weaver.  After that she was introduced to the B.C. Para-ski coordinator, Tony Chin.  Emily attended the annual Para-nordic camp in Canmore, and things seemed to fall into place from that moment on.  

 Personal:
A promising wrestler, Emily was injured during an accident back in July of 2009 at a wrestling training camp. At the time this was her sport of choice, and she loved every minute of it! it wasn't until 2010 when she got her first surgery on her arm when her career as a wrestler faded away. Determined to stick with sports, and with instruction from the doctors to stay away from contact sports, Emily found herself training for triathlon. At this point, her arm was still functioning at about 60 per cent of capacity, and she used two arms for all her elements.  In the end of 2010, Emily had another elbow surgery that unfortunately led to more set backs.  She continued with triathlon, however, her arm continued to degrade and she became more and more left hand dominant. Emily lost a lot of range of motion with her right arm.  In March 2014, following her most recent survey, Emily’s arm was left contacted at 90 degrees, and with loss of feeling and the use of some muscles.
