The Holmenkollen 50k, especially in classic technique, is an iconic event on the World Cup circuit. It was a bit of a damp day, with some wet snow and temperatures hovering around zero as the men got underway, not exactly ideal conditions for classic waxing.
It was fairly tight race, with a group of around 20 skiers still in the mix, with 10k to go. One skier not near the front, was World Cup leader Johannes Klaebo, who had been an early leader but dropped back significantly in the later stages. This could have a significant impact on his quest for a World Cup title.
As per normal, the race didn't lack for atmosphere, with a large turn out of fans, many that camped out overnight, cheering on every competitor.

With about 2 k to go, there was a significant increase in pace and a group of 7 broke away at the front, including Alex, who was skiing just behind Norway's Martin Sundby. Alex made a great attempt, but just couldn't quite match the extra bit of pace of 4 Russian skiers in front, finishing 5th, behind the winner Alex Bolshunov.
Jack Carlyle, the NorAm leader, also got strong support from the Norwegian fans, finishing in 42nd place, in his first World Cup race. Not the easiest start to your World Cup career.
Today's race was the 2nd best of the season for Alex, indicating he should be in great form for the
World Cup finals in Quebec City.
