Background

Drew first started skiing at six years old when he was encouraged by his first coach and Grade 5 school teacher, Bob Vanderwater, to join the Jackrabbit Ski League.  As a youngster, Drew loved skiing from the start.  The opportunities to travel with friends and family, as well as playing outside in the snow kept him involved over the years.  Today, racing against the best in the world is what Drew loves most about the sport.  Although he admits the most challenging aspects include being mentally and physically tough for each and every workout and race, Drew’s teammates, coaches and especially his parents, keep him motivated to succeed.

The 2003-04 season was a major step forward in Drew’s pursuit of excellence as he took his first steps on the World Cup circuit. He continued to build on that experience during the 2004-05 season with a career best finish of 21st at the World Championships in Oberstdorf, Germany and a return to the World Cup circuit. Drew impressed during his Olympic debut in 2006, recording a strong 31st-place sprint result. He took another major leap up the ladder of success at the 2007 World Championships in Sapporo, Japan finishing sixth in the team sprint event. The highlight of the 2007/08 season for Drew was a 12th place finish in the sprint at the Canmore World Cup. Drew spent the 2008/09 race season battling a serious foot injury and was ultimately unable to compete, he underwent surgery in the spring to fix the problem and is now back to training full time in preparation for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.

Aside from cross-country skiing, Drew is involved in many other sports.  He is especially fond of track, cross-country running and soccer. Having completed his first year of engineering at the University of Calgary, Drew has decided to dedicate himself entirely to skiing.  After his athletic career, he plans to resume his schooling and is looking at a career in the film industry or investment banking. In Drew’s free time, he enjoys actively resting, alpine skiing (Hucking in the terrain park), alpine touring, fishing, working on his car, riding his motorcycle, sport climbing, playing squash, badminton and soccer.

Pursuit of Excellence:

“Pursuit of excellence is the road you take to get there- not the final destination. It means doing everything you can, in both training and life to reach your ultimate goals.”
