      October 30, 2014

The weekend of October 17th to 19th, 2014 Para-Nordic athletes from across Ontario travelled to Sudbury, ON. The camp hosted by Cross Country Ontario (CCO) attracted 10 athletes; 4 sit skiers, 6 standing skiers, 6 coaches and 1 support person.

This year we were at a new venue, the Naughton Community Centre, which turned out to be perfect. The large gymnasium provided us plenty of room to do testing and indoor games, as well as the annual SkiErg time trials.  All athletes showed excellent improvements, with many personal bests achieved.  The competitiveness of the athletes (and some coaches) shone through during an adaptation of basketball – aptly named “butt basketball”

Saturday training was planned individually to help each athlete get more out of the camp. We had Draga try standing skiing for the first time in the soccer field. A chilly and rainy night made the grass just slippery enough to get some glide.  We wrapped up the day with team dinner out on the town.  Sunday the athletes completed a distance ski.

The weekend of technique sessions, strength workouts, equipment fittings and a distance workout brought the group together. The athletes who live in small towns enjoyed the opportunity to train with others.  Marked improvements were noted in all athletes and their commitment to excellence is evident.

Looking forward to the winter of 2015 and the upcoming competitive season.
