    • Ski Week Kickoff in Thunder Bay

      November 14, 2005

The snow is just outside Thunder Bay and fittingly the ski season kicked off in style this week with two events to launch the ski season.  The 7th annual Thunder Bay Nordic Fest or "Feast" on November 12 and on November 9 the organizing commitee for the 2006 Ski Nationals (presented by TBayTel) held a "warm up" to to highlight the upcoming championships.  The "warm up", held at the Prince Arthur Hotel, was attended by the local ski community, sponsoring organizations, and the media. Athletes were introduced and the 2006 ski apparel was available.

This was followed on Saturday by the Thunder Bay National Team Development Centre 7th annual Nordic Fest. The sold out event topped last year' s fundraising earning approximately $16, 000 for the development center. The sold out crowd enjoyed a fabulous meal that featured a variety of authentic Nordic dishes including smoked and baked salmon, Swedish meatballs, roast pork Norge, pickled herring, home style casseroles and calorie loaded deserts.

Silent and live auction items included a Souris River canoe, Montreal - Toronto hockey tickets, World Cup tickets and a wide range of ski wear, and service items all donated by the local community and sponsors.

It was a great send off week and start to the season for local athletes headed out to Sovereign Lake and Canmore. We would like to thank our many sponsors, "volunteer cooks", the tremendously supportive community of Thunder Bay for their continued support in making the weekend a success for the athletes we support.
