The final day of the Haywood NorAm World Jr. U23 trials took place today in Canmore, with classic, mass-start races. It was perfect racing conditions again, with temperatures just below 0 deg. C.

Racing started with the men's 30k, with all the Jr./U23 category winners knowing that a win would pretty much ensure they had gained a place on the World Championship team.

For the first 3 of 8 laps there was a group of 14 to 10 racers making up the lead pack. On the 5th lap the pack was down to 6, 2 juniors Sam Hendry of Canmore and Remi Drolet of Black Jack, with Skinouk's Antoine Cyr, the only U23 contender. Bob Thompson of Team Hardwood, Russell Kennedy of Canmore and Jack Carlyle of Soo Finnish were also in the mix, and fighting for the podium positions in the latter part of the race.

On the last lap a gap developed between Jack Carlyle, Bob Thompson and Russell Kennedy, with Jack leading on the final stretch before the finish. In the closing sprint Bob managed to catch and pass Jack for a photofinish win by .3 seconds. Russell came through in 3rd, 8 seconds later.

Sam Hendry came through as top junior and Antoine Cyr claimed the U23 spot, fractions of a second ahead of Remi Drolet. With Hendry claiming his 2nd top junior place, there are only 2 assured spots and the other positions will be filled by ranking lists.

The other U23 podium positions were taken by Olivier Hamel and Philippe Boucher of Skibec in 7th and 9th. There will be some tight decisions to be made on who fills out the remaining Jr. and U23 team positions.

For the women, Dahria Beatty of Whitehorse and Katherine Stewart-Jones of Nakkertok dropped the field on the first lap. Once again Dahria prevailed over Katherine at the finish, this time by just under 2 seconds. 3rd was Hannah Mehain of Telemark, the top U23, close to 2 minutes back. Black Jack's Jasmine Drolet was the top junior in 7th.
