It was -9 and sunny as the skate sprint events got underway at the 93rd running of the Lahti Ski Games.

Illness caused Alex Harvey and Cendrine Browne to miss the sprint and potentially resulted in some other team members passing up the start opportunity.

Hanna Falk of Sweden set the morning qualifying standard for the women, and Dahria Beatty, Canada's sole representative, was less than a second from qualifying in 34th place.

For the men, Julien Locke continued his solid World Cup sprint performances this season, finishing 42nd, just over a second from heats qualification. Andy Shields finished 60th. At the front Johannes Klaebo of Norway was the qualifying leader.

Overall, it was a good performance for the relatively inexperienced Canadian sprinters. Only a small margin of improvement would allow them to enter the heats, where anything can happen.

Next up on Sunday, 10 and 15 km. classic, interval start races.
