The last day of races at the 2018 Haywood NorAm in Mont Sainte-Anne couldn’t have been under more beautiful conditions with sunny blue skies and a comfortable -11C. The Interval Start Classic distance race was the final event for the athletes to meet selection criteria and secure their ticket to World Junior & U23 Championships as well as the Olympic Winter Games.

In the Junior Men category, Antoine Cyr of  Skinouk dominated for a third day in a row by a commanding lead of 48 seconds over Félix Longpré of Club Nordique MSA who also showed great form all week. Étienne Hébert of Montériski was the 3rd fastest of the day with a time of 26 :52 over the challenging 10km course.

In the Junior Women 5km event, Hannah Mehain of Sovereign Lake Nordic made her way to the top of the podium with a time of 15 :22, 3 seconds ahead of Whitehorse’s Natalie Hynes, Monday’s skiathlon champion. Annika Richardson of Hollyburn rounded out the podium 12 seconds later, another great result for the junior women free technique sprint winner in Mont Sainte-Anne.

The Open Women category saw a stunning performance by Quebec’s distance queen Cendrine Browne of Fondeurs-Laurentides who skied to a stellar 39 seconds lead over National Ski Team teammate Katherine Stewart-Jones of Nakkertok. Anne-Marie Comeau of Université Laval completed the top three, grabbing a podium finish for a second time this week, after having raced only 3 races this season.

After a disappointing crash in yesterday’s sprint which likely cost him the victory and his ticket to U23 World Champs, Ricardo Izquierdo- Bernier of Fondeurs-Laurentides showed his determination and character by winning the Open Men category 15km classic event and booking a ticket to Switzerland with Team Canada. Scott Hill of Team Hardwood  was 2nd fastest of the day followed by Graham Nishikawa of Whitehorse and guide to Paralympian Brian McKeever.
