The final day of World Cup racing before Christmas took place today in Toblach, Italy. The races were 10 and 15k classic. pursuit start competitions.

In the women's race Norway made a statement with 5 in the top 5 led by Marit Bjoergen, relegating yesterday's winner Sweden's Charlotte Kalla to 6th. Ingvild Oestberg was 2nd and Heidi Weng was 3rd.

For the Canadians, Emily Nishikawa was 53rd, Dahria Beatty 63rd, Cendrine Browne 66th and Katherine Stewart-Jones 70th.

The men's race had Alex Harvey starting in 4th, 14 seconds behind Saturday's race winner, Simen Krueger of Norway. Yesterday's sub 30 minute race was probably the fastest World Cup 15k ever, and it would be interesting to see what effect that may have on today's performances.

In the first 2 km. a front group of 4 had formed with Alex skiing with Andrew Musgrave and Maurice Manificat.  By the 1/2 way point the front pack had developed into a group of 8 with Alex still very much in contention.

As the race entered the final third, a pack of 12 had formed at the front and Alex was taking some turns at the lead. With 1.5 k to go Russia's Sergey Ustiugov decided to make a break, with only Norway's Johannes Klaebo able to match his pace.

Klaebo passed the Russian as they approached the stadium, and skied to a 2 second win at the line. Kazakhstan's Alexey Poltoranin finished 3rd. Alex was unable to match the speed at the front, finishing 9th.

Devon Kershaw moved up from 38th to 33rd, Graeme Killick was 50th, Russell Kennedy 66th and Knute Johnsgaard 76th.

Once again it was a decent race for Alex, who will now turn his attention towards the Tour de Ski after Christmas. The top group of Canadian skiers will be racing in the Tour starting Dec 30 in Lenzerheide Switzerland. The remaining team members will be returning to Canada and racing the Haywood NorAm/ Olympic trials in Mont Ste. Anne starting, Jan 6th.

Check back later for results from the final day of Haywood NorAm racing in Rossland, and at the Canmore Para-Nordic World Cup.
