    • Haywood RACE Report: Alex Harvey 14th in photo finish, Emily Nishikawa 34th at Tour de Ski, Stage 4

Stage 4 of the Tour de Ski, took place in Oberstdorf, Germany with classic, mass-start races. It was a very snowy day, a nice change for German TdS races, and just to challenge the athletes and wax techs a bit more, the temperature was hovering just around zero. No falling trees like last year though.

Ingvild Oestberg of Norway won the women's race to take over the Tour leader position. Emily Nishikawa was the lone Canadian racing, finishing just out of the World Cup points in 34th place.  A great performance considering she broke a ski at the 1k mark. Dahria Beatty has withdrawn from the Tour, along with many of the "sprint specialists" from other countries.

After the 3rd stage of the Tour, Alex Harvey has given up on hopes on an overall Tour podium, and is focussed on stage wins over the rest of the event.  He started strongly and was skiing in the top 10 for most of the first 10k.

It was a "choppy" race, with the leaders slowed down by the heavy snow, and many skiers having challenging wax performance to deal with. Alex went with "no-wax" skis and seemed to manage well throughout the course.

In the last 5k, Alex dropped a little back from the lead, finishing 14th in a photo finish with 3 other racers, 9 seconds from the lead. Bob Thompson was 64th and Lenny Valjas 67th.

Norway's Emil Iverson was the winner, and subsequently withdrew from the Tour, with Italian Francesco De Fabiani finishing a little under a second behind.

Alex moves to 15th in the overall Tour standings, with Johannes Klaebo of Norway in the lead.

The snowfalls are expected to continue into tomorrow's Stage 5 pursuit races. This will probably slow down the leaders and result in a close finish for a large pack of skiers once again.
