A beautiful sunny day, with temperatures just below zero as the women's Olympic 10k skate race got underway.

In the 15k race at the Olympics in Lake Placid, 1980, Thomas Wassberg of Sweden beat Finland's 6ft 4 in. Juha Mieto by 1/100th of a second for Olympic gold. After that race FIS turned to 1/10th of a second timing for distance races. As a result of that decision Finland's Krista Parmakoski and Norway's Marit Bjoergen shared a bronze medal today in the women's 10k skate race.

The winner was Ragnhild Haga of Norway, who beat the skiathlon winner Charlotte Kalla by a 20 second margin. Honourable mention goes to the U.S.'s Jesse Diggins in 5th, just 3 seconds shy of the podium.

The top Canadian result of the day went to Emily Nishikawa in 32nd. her best Olympic result, surpassing her 41st place finish in the Sochi skiathlon. With Dahria Beatty finishing 37th today, that makes 3 results in Korea, that are better than Sochi's top distance placing of 40th by Brittany Webster.

Dahria had been 30th at the 5k mark, 1 place ahead of Emily, but couldn't hold the pace on the 2nd half of the course.

Cendrine Browne came across the line in 43rd place and Anne-Marie Comeau finished 62nd.
