    • Lappe “Standard” Upgraded to Outperform as WJr/WU23 Trials a Wrap in Thunder Bay

      January 16, 2013

There is a new meaning to the Lappe Standard for the 400 or so athletes and coaches that attended the Haywood NorAm World Jr / U23 Trials over the first week of January in Thunder Bay.  Faced with no snow within the boundaries of Thunder Bay the Organizing Committee pulled out all the stops and put together a massive snow farming initiative over the holiday season to ensure great snow conditions and fair competitions for the Trials. While most of the ski community were celebrating the holiday season, 30 + volunteers from Big Thunder and Lappe Nordic collected and moved snow over the 5 km distance track and 1.4 km sprint course.

During the 3 race days at Lappe the cream of Canada’s domestic racing program rose to the top as Emily and Graham Nishikawa earned 3 first place finishes between them and now lead the COC FIS Regional Series.  Both Andrea Dupont and Phil Widmer picked up their first sprint wins of the season while local favourite Michael Somppi  capped off his homecoming with a gold in the 15 km on the last day of competition. A full photo library of the competition can be found on CCC`s Facebook page.

The Haywood NorAm Series now features back to back weekend events in Duntroon (January 26, 27) and Nakkertok (Feb 1-3).  Races in Duntroon will be used to help finalize selection of skiers heading to the World Senior Ski Championships while the 3 day event at Nakkertok will feature the Eastern Canadian Championships and the first mini-tour of the season.  Registration is open for both events on Zone4.
