       Day 1 Results for
      2014 Haywood NorAm Western Canadian Cross-Country Ski Championships. 

      Prince George, BC – The first day of the four day competition got off to a great start for BC and Alberta.  Geoffrey Richards from the Black Jack Ski Club in Rossland BC took first place in the Men’s Open 10 Km Classic at a time of 29:34.3 and Maya Macisaac-Jones from the Rocky Mountain Racers in Canmore Alberta placed first in the Women’s Open 7.5 Km Classic in a time of 26:12.3.

      Coming in second and third in the Men’s Open was Martin Schrama from Whistler Nordic Club and Colin Ferrie from Kimberly BC.  Coming in second and third in the Women’s Open was Ember Large of the Edmonton Nordic Club, Alberta and Alexandra Myshak-Davis of the Telemark Club in Kelowna BC.

      Emmy Phillips from Alberta’s Canmore Nordic Club captured first place in the Junior Girls 7.5 Km Classic in a time of 27:45.6, just edging out her team mate Lauren Turcot who crossed the finish line 11.9 seconds later.  Local Caledonia Ski Club skiers Emily Dickson and Pippa Roots both competed in this category finishing 14th and 19th respectively.

      Gareth Williams from the Telemark Club in Kelowna took first place in the Junior Boys 10 Km Classic at a time of 31:40.9 leaving second place for Alexander Corbelt from the Larch Hills Nordic Club in Salmon Arm BC finishing less than 4 seconds behind the leader.

      In the Juvenile Girls 5 Km Classic, Hannah Mehain from the Sovereign Lake Club in Vernon BC took first place and Kieran Lumb from the Hollyburn Club in Vancouver took first place in the Juvenile Boys 5 Km Classic.

      Remi Drolet from the Black Jack Club in Rossland BC took first place in the Midget Boys 5 Km Classic and Molly Miller from Kimberly won first place in the Midget Girls 5 Km Classic race.

      Races scheduled at the Otway Nordic Centre for the 14th to the 16th include:

      Ø      9:00 AM on Friday Feb 14 - Western Junior Sprints;

      Ø      10:00 AM on Saturday Feb 15 – Buff NorAm Senior Sprints;

      Ø      9:00 AM on Sunday Feb 16 – Free Technique Mass Start Race.

      The Caledonia Nordic Ski Club is hosting this major ski competition at Otway, sanctioned by the International Ski Federation (FIS is the world’s highest ski-sanctioning body), and is recognized as an official test event in preparation for the 2015 Canada Winter Games.
