    Noram Midget Championships

It's not every day that you have kids wanting to go to school all weekend, but this week in Joliette, Quebec over 250, 10-13 year olds did it willingly. The skiers were from over 20 clubs in Eastern Canada that were attending the 16th Noram Midget Championships hosted by the Club Defi T.M. in Joliette.

The skiers travelled to the Lanaudiere Region from 3 US states, the Yukon, New Brunswick, Ontario and Quebec and were treated to 3 days of racing, fun and festivities. Nakkertok had over 70 racers in attendance and were joined by 10 Yukon skiers that are participating in an exchange program with club members in the 1997 age group. The Nakkertok skiers will travel to the Yukon for a week in March, as part of the exchange.

Skiers arrive at the école secondaire Thérèse-Martin on Friday evening, their home for the weekend, and sleep in class rooms and gymnasiums before leaving bright and early on Monday morning, just in time for the return of the real students. The school is ideal as it has a cafeteria that serves breakfast as well as a spaghetti dinner on Saturday.

The co-operation of l’école secondaire Thérèse-Martin and the local school board is immense as at the race site two local elementary schools are used as athlete "lounges" with box lunches provided as well as change rooms and washrooms.

The races are held at the ski trails of St-Gabriel-de-Brandon,  Les sentiers Brandon, and despite +10 deg. C. weather on the Friday and -7 deg. temperatures on the first race day, the trails were in excellent shape and the organization was superb.

Saturday included 4 k interval start, classic races followed by a spaghetti dinner provided by the organizers, with Sunday's schedule a wave start 4k free technique event. For many athletes Sunday night is the highlight of the weekend with the awards banquet and dance where at least as much energy is displayed on the dance floor as was on display at the trails.

A feature of this year's banquet was a video of Alex Harvey's World Cup silver medal race from earlier in the day. Alex attended several Noram Midget events which helped inspire his search for even greater travels and success on the ski trails. This year Chelsea Nordiq claimed the club championship trophy.

Monday is the final day and includes fun relays.  Teams of 6 club skiers are formed that must include 1 male and female from each of the Peewee and Midget categories and 2 other skiers. Costumes are also highly encouraged.
